psv file (which wouldn't open despite appearing there). Once I had it running I threw in my FF7.mcs into it and exported the memory card image (MC file), now I had my FF7 save file in a MC file.įinally back to black chocobo, this was the moment. Like I said before, black chocobo needs the data to be in a memory card, which is an MC file, thankfully there is a program that creates virtual memory cards, that program is called PSXGameEdit. Well this step actually took me the longest to figure out. All I needed to do now was put the MCS in an MC file.

This actually worked as advertised no issues here.

I run over to my PC plug in my USB drop the PSV into a tool called PSV Exporter, to grab the MCS from there.

So then the gears started turning again, "it's a PS1 classics game, it works on PS3, what if I just plug in my vita to my old PS3, transfer the save file to the PS3 and then transfer it from there to the USB?", sure enough after dusting off my PS3 and doing this weird ass daisy chain I got my save data in PSV format. While I was looking through some old PS3 save transfer videos I realized people using USBs to transfer save data to and from their PS3 had their data export as PSV files, and tools exist to yank an MCS out of them. I found a VMP to MCS converter but I couldn't get it working so I was kind of stuck. The VMP format is apparently just how the psp / vita package their saves I think? Anyway I realized this wasn't going to fly. So I did some more digging and apparently black chocobo can only read MC files which is the memory card data which are a container for the true save data which is an MCS file. Which I could not get black chocobo to read at all. That's because when you export a PS1 save file from a vita it via the content manager tool it exports as a VMP file. And honestly I was KIND OF close but I made one (rather major) incorrect assumption, that the FF7 save files exported from a vita would be readable by black chocobo. That's when my brain's gears started turning "wouldn't all I have to do is plug in my vita, use the content manager to get the save file on my PC then drop it into black chocobo and export it as a steam port?". There were a few youtube guides on the subject of save editing and I started to realize that the popular save editing program "Black Chocobo" which is used a lot by speed runners and modders had the option to export the save in various compatible formats, one of those was for the steam version of FF7.

Well this past weekend I saw the FF7 version on steam was on sale again for like 6 bucks so I was like "oh yeah I'd like to try out that AI upscaling mod at some point and see how that works", then I wondered if I could somehow import my Vita save file into the steam version.

Well I went through it, loved it even more than the last time I played it and I was going to go through and try to 100% the post game stuff like getting KOTR and mastering every Materia but then I decided to play other games instead. Last year prior to FF7R launching I decided to replay FF7 for the umpteenth time, I chose to play it on my PS Vita since I originally purchased the PS1 classics version of this game to play on my PSP back in like 2009 or something so I was able to just download and begin playing again. I don't know if anyone will find this remotely interesting but this is how I imported my PS1 FF7 save file from my vita into the steam version successfully, sort of felt like discovering cross save for a 25 year old game.
